Kim Kardashian’s acting career has been rocky.
Ryan Murphy’s new series “Lazy Fair,” starring the reality star, has received harsh criticism from critics, particularly for Kardashian’s portrayal of fictional divorce lawyer Alura Grant.
The series follows a group of powerful female lawyers who help their clients get revenge on ruthless wealthy men. On Tuesday, the series had a 0% critic rating on the film-focused website Rotten Tomatoes. By Wednesday, that rating had risen to 6%.
“…Kardashian’s stiff, unpleasant performance, which fails to make any real impact, is the main issue,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter’s television critic. “Her presence in the spotlight seems fitting for a series that doesn’t want to be seen as a viral hit.”
The Telegraph’s television critic called the legal drama “a crime against television.”
Kardashian got the idea for the main character after hosting a dinner with Disney Entertainment Executive Vice President Dana Walden Murphy and Kardashian-Jenner’s mother Kris Jenner.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy said at the show’s lavish premiere at the DGA Theater Complex in Los Angeles: “I went to Kris’ house and did something I’ve never done in my career: I did a reality show, and it didn’t go very well,” he said. “I started pitching, and I was a little nervous. When future pitchers started messaging Kim, you’re going to lose Kim. I finished pitching, and I was a little nervous. Kris said, ‘That was really good, honey, but you should write a role for Kim.’”
Murphy, who also executive produced the series with Jenner, praised Kardashian, calling her “amazing.”
Kardashian was the focus of the show’s promotional materials and was a prominent figure in trailers ahead of its release. The entrepreneur says her character’s inspiration came from her own divorce lawyer, Laura Wasser. Wasser also works with clients like Angelina Jolie, Kevin Costner, and Ariana Grande.
The role is the first of several Hollywood projects that Kardashian has set her sights on. Eva Longoria is also rumored to direct Kardashian in a Netflix comedy called “The Fifth Wheel” and play the villain Kardashian in a “Bratz” adaptation. She previously had a cameo role opposite Emma Roberts as a producer on Murphy’s “American Horror Story” series and provided voice work in two “PAW Patrol” films.
Like Murphy’s other series, “All Things Fair” stars Naomi Watts, Nikki Nash-Bates, Sarah Paulson, Teyana Taylor and Glenn Close.
However, critics have noted that the series’ top Hollywood stars are not enough to boost ratings.
