Canon has announced the EOS R6 Mark III, its latest full-frame mirrorless camera designed to meet all your photo and video needs. The new camera features a 32.5-megapixel sensor, improved autofocus, up to 7K video recording, and a new dual-card system with a faster CFexpress Type B slot. Scheduled for release on November 25th, the body-only model will cost $2,799, while kits with the RF 24-105mm STM lens or the RF 24-105mm L lens will cost $3,149 and $4,049, respectively.
The R6 series is aimed at larger users who don’t need the high 45-megapixel resolution of the more expensive EOS R5 Mark II or don’t want to spend over $4,000 for the body alone. However, the R6 Mark III isn’t all that bad, as it’s upgraded from the previous-generation model’s 24-megapixel resolution to 32.5 megapixels. The Mark III can shoot high-quality video up to 4K/120p and 7K/60p RAW and offers full corner-to-corner open-port shooting support for added cropping flexibility.
Canon’s Log 2 mode and more gamma settings are available, along with the Custom View feature. However, the most useful functional changes for videographers may be the addition of a signal light for remote focusing during shooting and the switch from a micro HDMI port to a full-size Type-A HDMI port. As for the new camera’s autofocus system, you can now register a person’s face, which prioritizes continuous tracking.
One change that may polarize some is Canon’s move from dual SD card slots on the R6 Mark II to an asymmetrical setup consisting of one CFexpress Type B and one SD card slot on the Mark III. CFexpress can reach higher speeds, so the R6 Mark III can shoot long bursts at higher resolutions while maintaining the same shooting speed as the previous-generation model (12 fps with the mechanical shutter or 40 fps with the electronic shutter). However, CFexpress cards are generally more expensive and more difficult to use multiple card formats. Unlike CFexpress Type A, Type B card slots cannot be configured to accept SD cards, as you might find on Sony’s combo-slot cameras.
Canon has an interesting new lens launching alongside the EOS R6 Mark III: the RF 45mm f/1.2 STM. It’s a compact, standard prime lens with a maximum aperture that’s quite bright for low-light shooting and offers a very shallow depth of field. It’s one of the most affordable f/1.2 lenses I’ve heard of; it’s priced at $469.99 and is expected to be available in early December. Full-frame, autofocus lenses with an f/1.2 aperture typically sell for around $1,500, even from third-party sources like Sigma, so finding one for under $500 from Canon is quite rare.
However, this isn’t an L-lens, meaning it’s not weather-sealed, and you’ll need to pay an additional $59.99 for a lens hood. Canon’s US representative, Drew McCallum, says the lens isn’t for pixel enthusiasts because it requires in-camera correction to support image processing and its low cost. However, for those whose favorite lens is the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2, I’d like to see affordable f/1.2 lenses become a trend.
